Reading the Metal: Identifying Genuine Catherine II 5 Kopeck Coins

Catherine II’s 5 kopeck coins are not subtle objects. They are large, heavy copper pieces struck with immense force. That force leaves a permanent record in the metal itself. Understanding the record of how the metal moved, settled, and aged is the key to separating genuine  struck coins from cast counterfeits. Most deceptive fakes are cast instead of being struck. That single difference in manufacture creates a cascade of physical traits that become difficult to ignore once recognized.

The skill lies in learning how metal behaves under pressure and how cast metal imitates it imperfectly.

Metal That Has Been Moved vs. Metal That Has Been Poured

A genuine coin is created when a solid copper blank is crushed between two dies. Under that pressure, the metal behaves almost like a thick fluid, forced outward and upward into every recess of the design. This process leaves behind microscopic traces of movement known as flow lines.

These lines are not scratches. They are the physical result of metal displacement, often radiating outward from the center or gathering around letters and design elements where the metal had to “flow” the most. Even when faint, they give the surface a kind of directional energy. Light reflects off a struck coin in a way that feels dynamic as shown in this image.

A cast counterfeit, however, is formed when liquid metal cools inside a mold. There is no pressure-driven movement across the surface. Instead, the metal simply settles and freezes. The result is a surface that lacks direction entirely. It appears static, often slightly granular, sometimes even waxy in appearance.

With experience, this becomes one of the most tangible clues to origin. Genuine surfaces look worked whereas cast surfaces are dull and non-directional.

Corrosion Is Not Texture

One of the most common mistakes in identifying genuine coins is confusing corrosion with casting defects. Catherine II copper coins are frequently found in rough condition, and genuine corrosion can be severe, but it does not resemble the porosity found with casting.

Corrosion is chaotic on a real coin. It cuts into the metal unpredictably, creating sharp-edged voids, layered damage, and irregular depth. It looks destructive, because it is.

On a cast fake, the surface often shows evenly distributed pits that are rounded and similar in size. It can almost appear like a sandy surface. These pits are not the result of environmental damage but of trapped gas bubbles during cooling. They sit on the surface rather than cutting into it.

The Geometry of Detail

The way a design rises out of the surface also tells you how it was made.

Letters, numerals, and emblems meet the surrounding field with crisp transitions on a struck coin. Protected areas retain evidence of crisp structure, even on a worn example, because the metal was forced hard into the die, filling it completely.

Cast coins rarely achieve this sharp appearance. Their details tend to look softened, as if slightly melted. Edges are rounded, transitions are gradual, and the overall impression is less precise. This is not just wear it is a limitation of the casting process that was used.

If the details look swollen rather than worn, you are likely not looking at a struck coin.

The Edge: Where Fakes Reveal Themselves

The edges of Catherine II’s 5 kopeck coins reveal a lot about how they were made. These large copper coins were struck in the 18th century using fairly basic techniques. Unlike modern coins made with precision collars, their edges are often slightly irregular in diameter and thickness. Genuine edges are broad and gently rounded, sometimes showing faint lines where the metal settled during striking. Small nicks or uneven spots are normal and part of their character.

Cast counterfeits, however, often try to mimic this shape but leave clues of the mold. Seams from the two-part mold can appear as straight or filed lines around the edge, sometimes leaving subtle scars or uneven thickness. Unlike the natural variation of struck coins, cast edges often feel more uniform and flat, lacking the subtle texture that comes from compressed metal.

Comparing both shape and texture makes it much easier to tell a genuine Catherine II coin from a cast fake, even when the main design looks convincing.

Sound and Structure

A genuine copper coin is consistent dense mass. It produces a clear, resonant sound with lightly tapped or flipped.

A cast counterfeit, with it's thousands of microscopic voids and less uniform structure, creates a short dull sound. A thud.

This, however, is not a primary test, since corrosion can affect sound, but it reinforces what your eyes are already telling you.

Weight, Size, and Proportion

Since Catherine II’s 5 kopeck coins were struck in the 18th century using relatively simple minting methods, they do not exhibit the uniformity of modern coins. Genuine coins were hammered between dies without a rigid collar, so variations in diameter and thickness are normal. However, there is a reliable range you can use when assessing authenticity.

Typically, authentic Catherine II 5 kopeck coins weigh around 50–52 grams, though individual strikes can vary significantly due to planchet thickness and metal composition. Some have even been documented up to 60 grams. 

In terms of diameter, most struck examples fall between 41 mm and 43 mm, with many centers around 42 mm. Thickness for genuine issues is usually close to 3.5–5 mm, again with minor variation from piece to piece.

A copy that is dramatically lighter or noticeably off in proportion—for example, much thinner relative to its diameter or weighing well under 45 grams—should raise suspicion. Casting often produces coins with internal voids or inconsistent metal distribution, leading to weights that fall outside these historical norms.

These physical measurements are not standalone proof, but when combined with surface texture, detail sharpness, and edge characteristics, they help form a consistent picture of authenticity.

The “Alive” Surface

There is a final quality that is difficult to define but easy to recognize with experience.

A struck coin reflects light with variation. The surface seems active, even when worn. This is the result of its underlying structure—flow lines, compression, and the way the metal was forced into shape. Note the sharp edges and flow lines radiating from the center that are still visible in this well worn example.

A cast coin tends to look flat. Light does not move across it in the same way. It appears visually quieter, almost inert.

Collectors sometimes describe this simply as the difference between a coin that looks “alive” and one that does not.

When Everything Comes Together

No single test should stand alone. A heavily corroded genuine coin may lack visible flow lines. A well-made counterfeit may obscure a seam.

But when multiple indicators align—grainy surface, soft detail, edge anomalies, dull sound, incorrect proportions—the conclusion becomes increasingly clear.

Authentic coins show consistency because they were made through a controlled, force-driven process. Cast counterfeits reveal inconsistency because they are approximations.

That difference is always there, waiting to be read in the metal.
